NEW SMUD EXHIBITION VENTURES OUT IN THE OPEN WITH THE WORKS OF LOCAL PLEIN AIR PAINTERS

Public Receptions: The public is invited to meet the artists at a FREE reception on Thursday, August 20, 2009, from 4 to 6 p.m.

En plein air: Sacramento Artists Working Out in the Open, an exhibition featuring the work of 16 Sacramento area artists, opens at the SMUD Art Gallery, 6301 S Street, Sacramento on Wednesday, July 1, 2009.

The exhibition includes oil and watercolor paintings of rural and urban scenes from the Sacramento region and beyond, painted in plein air. The en plein air practice, dating back to the 19th Century, is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors versus in the studio. The plein air artist paints from direct observation in order to capture the light and form of the landscape.

Exhibiting artist's are members of the Sacramento Fine Arts Center (SFAC), a joint collective of independent art clubs dedicated to the creation and presentation of the visual arts to the local community.
